Nuclear membrane

The nuclear membrane consists of a double membrane, which purpose is to keep the nucleus and cytoplasm separated, to allow a highly controlled gene expression. This boundary allows controlled genetic transcription in the nucleus that is separated from the location of translation in the cytoplasm. The outer membrane is continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum, whereas the inner one functions as anchoring sites for chromatin. Nuclear pores in the membrane enable selective transport of molecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm.

Immunofluorescent staining

The nuclear membrane is easy to recognize, the staining forming a thin circle around the nucleus. It is sometimes also possible to see the many folds of the nuclear membrane.
