Expression of MUC1 in cancer - Staining overview

The cancer tissue page shows antibody staining in 20 different cancers. The overall cancer tissue staining statistics shows the fraction of patient samples with high, medium, low or not detected (as described by the color-coding scale in the box to the right), using all the available antibodies to the protein targets encoded by this gene. The assay and annotation is described here.

The cancers can be ordered histologically or alphabetically.

For each cancer, the staining for each available antibody is reported as the fraction of samples with antibody staining level high, medium, low or not detected (as described by the color-coding scale in the box to the right). The length of the bar represents the number of patient samples analyzed (max=12 patients). By clicking on a cancer tissue, the detailed staining data for that cancer is available, including annotated images.

At the bottom of this page, a summary for the cancer staining for each antibody is given, together with the literature conformity for the staining pattern revealed by that specific antibody.

Summary

Most malignant cells showed moderate to strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity, often granular. Nuclear positivity was observed in a few cases. Several cases of malignant gliomas, lymphomas and melanomas as well as skin, renal and liver cancers were weakly stained or negative.

Most malignant cells displayed moderate to strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity, in some cases accompanied with nuclear positivity.

Most malignant cells showed weak to moderate membranous and/or cytoplasmic positivity. A few lung, gastric and endometrial cancers were strongly stained. Most malignant melanomas and several malignant gliomas were negative.

Adeno- and squamous carcinomas generally showed strong cytoplasmic positivity. Non-epithelial malignancies were negative. High grade prostate carcinomas were negative, in contrast to low grade ones. Some thyroid cancers positive, others negative. Bladder and kidney cancers were either strongly positive or negative. Hepatocellular carcinomas negative but cholangiogenic positive. Gliomas were generally negative, but their stroma sometimes positive. Testicular tumors negative, but some showed focal intense staining.

Breast, lung, gastric, pancreatic, liver and gynaecological cancers showed moderate cytoplasmic positivity. Remaining malignancies were weakly stained or negative.
